The Complete Guide to Fenglee's Attack on Titan Tribute Game 2021

Right after finishing the anime "Shingeki no Kyojin" or "Attack on Titan", the first thing that struck my mind (more like the second, if you count in the point that its awesomeness struck me) was that this anime has great potential for games.

I immediately became resolute to make a game out of it. Only to be thrashed down to the bottom of the titan's fabulous foot with a squishy sound when reminded of the fact that I have no idea how to model in 3d and my programming skills are a little more than none.

So, the idea was pretty much thrown aside, and like what any ordinary fifteen-year-old kid would do when wanting to play a game that doesn't exist (trust me, it feels really complicated), I wait for who-knows-when an Attack on Titan game would show up.

Fortunately the who-knows-when was actually just a couple of weeks later.

A Chinese developer under the name of Feng Li developed a fan-made game in tribute to the anime series Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan through the Unity game engine.

The game is playable through this link:
Shingeki no Kyojin Tribute game

And if you haven't seen the anime yet, watch or download it HD and free here:
Shingeki No Kyojin (sub) 1080p

With this you'll be able to slash and maneuver around while singing "Seid ihr das Essen? Nein, wir sind der Jaeger!~" any time you want. But, this information alone is not worth my time in punching in a blog.
Because he wasn't invited to join the Avengers, he joined the battle for humanity against Titans.

My objective here is to brief you before we face the onslaught of humanity; that we may bring back humanity's freedom from those wretched humanoid beasts!

Warning:  This was posted on August 29, 2014 based on the version v07292014 and is susceptible to changes in terms of updates and whatever.

So, with that set aside, let's begin.

I. Controls

First things first: How to move in-game.

The movement controls are [W], [A], [S] ,[Dfor forward, left, backward, and right respectively.
The one most difficult part of controlling.

[Q] and [E] shoots a hook from their respective sides. You can shoot both simultaneously, or separately. The hooks will shoot at the crosshair's direction.
Steady...steady....Boom! You're killed by a crawler.

[space bar] shoots both hooks to grapple onto a surface and reel in quickly. the [<] and [>] GUI objects are the hook's target when spacebar is pressed.
I've run out of caption jokes. Which aren't even funny.

[L ctrl] (left control) is used to jump around 10-20m (in-game of course. Why, can you jump 10-20 meters?) in the direction you are facing to dodge.
No, she's not actually dodging, she's just lying down because she didn't get to eat lunch.

[L shift] (left shift) is used to jump five to ten meters into the air. Holding L shift  allows the player to use the gas supply. Gas can be used to greatly propel towards the direction you are facing and can be used alongside the hooks of the 3d maneuver gears. It can be refilled at supply containers.
Behold the magnificent fart propeller!
[F] is used to lock the camera on to the nape of the nearest titan. It is barely used to deploy in a successfull kill.
See those brackets on its nape? Yes, you can shoot laser beams now. Mehuehuehue
[P] Pauses the game. A menu opens up with settings wherein you are able to change the controls, quality, mouse sensitivity, etc.
Do I need to put a picture in every detail?

[Backspace/ Esc] Backspace toggles fullscreen mode on or off, while Esc exits it.
No picture this time.

[L mouse button] Allows the player to slash from left to right.
I like pictures.

[R mouse button] Uses the character's special attack.
Seid ihr das Essen? Nein, wir sind der Jaeger!

[Mouse wheel] Allows players to retract their hooks quicker, sending them straight to the point of their hook's placement. This is useful for quick snapping to the neck of a titan after circling around it a few times.

[Enter] Let's you send messages to other players.

HORSE CONTROLS \m/

[L Shift] (left shift) When you are on foot, jump to mount the horse. The horse won't need any assistance from you, so you shouldn't press any directional keys while jumping. While mounted, pressing Lshift will slow the horse down, useful for capturing objectives without overshooting.
Take out the Whores I mean Horses!
[L Ctrl] (Left Control) Launches the player off the horse immediately. It is useful for dodging body-slamming titans, sacrificing your horse. Just kidding, horses don't die. They become anime.
Escape fabulously

Side note: Horses will automatically spawn or teleport or run to you when you get too far away or die. It is usually tiring to just run through the outer walls on foot. You can use [Q], [E], or [Space] to dismount from the horse.

II. Time of Day

One of the game's new mechanics is the choice to set the time in either Day, Night or Dawn.

Day- The sun is shining, slightly cloudy, blue skies. Perfect weather to kill titans.
Unless you're writing a blog while playing solo and the next time you check the game you're in this situation, then you're screwed.
Dawn- The light levels start to change, dimming and amplifying your excitement. Long-ranged sight is slightly more difficult.
Ah, the beauty of the sunrise/sunset/whatever-time-it-is-that-has-orange-sun
Night- Compare this to playing slenderman but with many gigantic, butt-naked slendermen. What's left for your enjoyment is a small area of concentrated light dissipating after the 10m radius.
Let's dance--- Wait.. What do you mean there's a flying titan behind me?

III. Playable Characters

In this bit, we'll get to know our character and see how similar they are, despite their cute chibiness, to the anime. This way, you'll be able to choose you favorite character by your fighting style.

The stats I'm giving here are not exact, but are scored 1-10, with ten as the highest. These are taken from the multiplayer character selection.
Speed is scored with the actual non-accelerated to the maximum displacement by time.
Gas is scored by its conservation with 5 as the average, since I needed to make a mid-point in this case, and is based on Armin and Jean, who has the lowest gas consumption per ten seconds of farting. Take note that I am disregarding Jean's 50% decremented gas consumption, which would've been the highest if it weren't his passive skill.
The blades' scoring is based on the blade strength and how many slashes it takes before it gets destroyed. Of course, I have the real numbers, but I don't think this'll be universally accurate, so I'll stick with 1-10, with Armin as the basis.
The acceleration's rank is based on how fast they get faster. That makes sense.
Oh, and I wouldn't rank their special skills. They're different and are useful in their own way. (and I might get bashed on by the fans. but whatever.)

Human Players

Mikasa- The character whose special skill pretty much defies physics. Right clicking with Mikasa in the air will immediately halt her horizontal displacement and she'll slash downward hard until an object is hit. This skill is very useful, if you have the reaction time, to escape from titan grabs and such. On Hard and Abnormal modes, she, if played properly, is the vice of aberrant crawlers. What's best is the fact that it has a very short cooldown and such. Her skill's downside though, is being left vulnerable to the titans in close proximity to you on the ground.
Oh, the symmetry
Speed: 8
Gas: 5
Blades: 5
Acceleration: 8

A sideways "\m/"

Levi- Uses his popular signature hook and swing move. Levi grapples onto the place the crosshairs are pointed at and then swings at a clockwise motion at that direction. Swing times are very short, and is recommended to use only when in close proximity to the target. When travelling at high speed, there is a risk of overshooting or being thrown the other way if not skilled enough.
His skill cracks the heavens...
Speed: 6.5
Gas: 7
Blades: 7
Acceleration: 10

Pinky finger

ArminDances and looks cute. The titans around him gets distracted and laughs for about 3 seconds. Useful for team's survival when sided with Marco. Titans may not laugh because they are in mid-action, or they just don't care. Talk about character similarity.
Nobody is as kawaii as I.
Speed: 4.5
Gas: 10
Blades:
Acceleration: 5

MarcoGrabs the attention of all the titans in close proximity and attracts them towards himself, granting the teammates a chance to escape or to attack from behind. It's bested in Trost, for aggroing the Titans toward him than the objective Titan Eren. It may or may not work on all titans, and those in mid-action.
This is the new One Direction

Speed: 7
Gas: 6.5
Blades: 7.5
Acceleration: 6

JeanWhen grabbed by a titan, left clicking allows Jean to cut himself free from a titan's grip. The cooldown of this ability is unheard of. Although there are claims of having used the ability more than once in a single run, but they are unconfirmed. Other than that, Jean has a hidden passive ability that decreases his gas consumption by 50%. This passive ability is useful for prolonged fights like the Collosal Titan or the Forest Game modes. On another note, he's also able to slice from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left when pressing right and left click.
I know, I know. I'm not that good at timing screenshots correctly but,
you should be able to get the idea that I just escaped from the dreaded clutches of the huge naked guy.

Speed: 6.5
Gas: 10 (Gas consumption is decreased by 50%)
Blades: 5.5
Acceleration: 6.5

Eren- Screws all logic and turns into the freaking Titan Eren. Although it is considered impractical and cheap for normal mode (mostly because his stats are pretty low), it's everything's vice in the hard and abnormal modes. Eren can brutally kill the titans with hook punches on the head, cutting it off. The titan's right click holds the lives of the midget titans as he kicks them away to their certain demise. Unless Titan Eren is chosen in single player, transformation will only last for 30 seconds, with 120 seconds cooldown.
"Dat ass", says the blonde titan behind him.

Speed:
Gas: 5.5
Blades: 5.5
Acceleration: 6

Petra-  Akin to Levi, Petra hooks onto a target and front-flips with her blades in front. Possible hit number is three times, but has a short duration. It has a shorter and weaker abnormal pull, compared to Levi. It should best be used 10m-20m away from the target.
Time to go to the dentist.

Speed: 5
Gas: 7
Blades: 6
Acceleration: 9.5

Sasha- Pretty much my favorite character (this is my opinion :p).  Sasha eats a potato, allowing a dramatic increase in speed. She'll be almost as fast as a giant crawler, or even the Female Titan on abnormal mode. Has a 20 second cooldown. Her ability lasts somewhere 5-10 seconds.
It may not look much, but this is on abnormal level, and I'm outrunning a crawler.

Speed: 5.5
Gas: 6
Blades: 6
Acceleration: 7

Titan Players

Jumper/Abnormal/Aberrant- Or whatever you want to call them. These are the only playable Titan characters, but they have unbalanced mechanics(though I obviously won't be ranking them for blades, gas, and acceleration). Pressing [Space] permits you to jump 45 degrees forward-upward. Left clicking gets you to attack, while right clicking lets you belly flop the heck onto the ground.

IV. AI Enemy Titans

First of all, the variety of titan sizes applies to all types of titans, so that doesn't really matter here. I'll also be enumerating the moves the titan can use to murder you and/or explode in a beautiful crimson firework of limbs. One point in is the fact that these aren't the actual names of the titan's moves. I'll just be naming them as rationally as possible.

Normal- These titans are the epitome of normal if you've considered living in a city enclosed by a humongous wall to keep everyone safe from the gigantic naked bastards. Although they may not seem as intimidating when dragging into account the abnormal and crawler types, you'll be equally as dead when compared to the other types.
These titans will kill you by:

  • Biting: Moving only the head(and mouth of course), a titan has the ability to cut your wiener off by biting you. The titan's reach encompasses the front, the left side, and the right side.
  • Grabbing: The titan is able to grab you from above its head, nape, ground on the left side, and ground on the right side, then munches you like the crunchy little chibi you are.
  • -Flailing: You're pretty much screwed if you are right in front of it when it's flailing. It swings its arms alternately in a clawing manner and smash the ground in front of it as the third move. After the smash, the titan stops for about three seconds, giving you time to get payback if you aren't disembodied yet.
  • -Smashing: Other than the very predictable flailing, Titans can smash you right off the bat. The titan is able to hit the ground right in front of it, and the nape. Heck, it can even hit its own face if you are grappling there.
  • -Stomping: Yeah. Pretty much what it says. The titan will stomp on you if you're close enough.

Abnormal- Remember when they were retaking Trost? Ya' know, the arc where Mikasa saves hundreds of civilians from titans and annoying merchants?(please omit the last stated) Yeah, this type of titan pretty much acts the same. There's an inversely proportional observation that "The bigger they are, the slower they run", this means that you have no hope in outrunning a small abnormal titan unless you're a potatoe'd Sasha. Oh, and just when you thought that this is already pretty intimidating and the fact that they're able to also do what the normal titans can, guess what...

  • They can jump and bite you in mid-air: Just like how Eren's legs were bitten off, but I'm not talking about just a short jump, It can jump pretty much as high as your 3D maneuver gear can take you.
  • They can pancake flop you consecutively: Once close enough, they'll do a large-area flop on the player. Even worse, they can do it and recover really quickly. But after several flops, they tire and that's when you should strike.

Crawler- Although they're also considered abnormal, I'm placing them in a different category since they are a whole different taste of death with death salad and death for toppings. For first timers and a huge percentage of the so-called 'intermediate players', as soon as you can see a crawler  more or less 300 meters from you, regardless if you're high up in the air or, when you're out of luck and are on the ground, you should be dead in less than 10 seconds because...

  • They can jump and bite you in mid-air: Pretty much like how 'normal' abnormal titans can, but their mouths are like lawn-mowers and they'll bite and bite and bite in mid-air until a player pops in.
  • They can also mow you like an actual lawn mower: From the 'crawler' name, well, they crawl at really fast speeds, regardless of their sizes this time. And while they're at it, they're constantly opening and closing their mouths as if their whole lives depend on it. Unless you're Sasha, you'll never be able to outrun this without using the 3d maneuver gear.
V. Game Objects/Mechanics

Well, to those who haven't seen or read the 'Attack on Titan' multimedia, or those who have something against anime and are looking for a spider man simulator, the 3D maneuver gear used in this game should pretty much be it. That is, if spider man uses twin blades, has gas canisters attached to his sides and is fond of slicing the napes of naked giant dudes. The 3D maneuver gear hooks and lines act like a pendulum in this crappy physics-embossed game we call reality. So, trying to do those tricky moves akin to what Mikasa or Levi does will take a lot to practice.

Gas- Gas allows you to propel and travel about twice your normal hook-and-retract speed through the air in your travelling direction. This also means that if you've catapulted yourself upwards and press Lshift for gas, you'll be propelled higher up. You should use this discretely. The concern isn't centered on conservation, but the control. Excessive use could turn a simple turn into a freaking pendulum maneuver around and around and around a titan's neck and get you slapped on its own face like a fly. Gas can be refilled at any canister station in the map.

Twin blades- The player's twin swords are used to cut the nape of the titan's neck. But then again, unlike the strict horizontal slice showed in the anime, you're able to slice the nape in whatever direction you want in the game. The sword's range has about a 2-to-3-meter radius from the blades when in idle and an extra 1 meter behind and in front of the sword's swing. Characters with non-lethal special abilities (such as Jean), the right click allows the sword to slash from right to left instead of left to right. The direction of the swing gives an opportunity to kill the titan while standing on its shoulder. It's durability is decreased further when a lethal skill such as Petra's and Levi's is used on a titan than when using normal attacks.

Damage- Damage is affected by the speed of which you are travelling and the amount of time you've readied(long pressed/charged/whatever) your attack. I might have not mentioned it earlier(which I should have), but you're able to charge your normal attacks by long-pressing the left mouse button. Non-lethal skilled characters can use both left and right hold.

VI. Maps

Single player
City  This gamemode shoves you against 15 titans, pretty similar to the old City I and City II.

Forest - This gamemode is similar to the City, but your situated in a map featuring the anime/manga's Forest of the Fallen Giants [I told you this has some spoilers].

Forest Survival (no Crawlers)- Pretty much in the same map as the Forest game mode. And what's more is the fact that this gamemode is survival. Meaning, there aren't any limits to your titan murders. My highscore is 142 x)

Multiplayer

Racing Akina- This map gets you playing a racing/obstacle course game. The Red Surfaces will kill you. Green pumps will refill your gas.

The City- The same as the one mentioned in singleplayer. But this time, you'll have comrades and enemy player titans.

  • The City III- It's a capture the checkpoint mode.

The Forest- Same as single player, but with other human players.

  • The Forest II- You and your comrades needs to survive 20 waves.
  • The Forest III- You and your comrades needs to survive 20 waves. Dead players revive after every round
  • The Forest IV (Floor is Lava)- Need to survive 20 rounds. Dead players revive after every round. You mustn't touch the floor.

Outside The Walls- This is where things get more story-esque. The "Outside The Walls" map requires humanity to successfully secure every area. What you need to do is fend off any of those mongrels, and wait on the white(neutral) or yellow(enemy) zones until it is considered a successful capture. You win if either side loses all their points or if you team is able to capture all the zones.

VII. Special Game Modes

Female Titan- I've always wanted to destroy her ever since she killed Petra, beat Eren and Mikasa. Well, everyone has their own reasons to want her demise, other than the fact that this game mode is really challenging.  On normal mode, she has 1000 hp.

Really challenging, I suppose you'll need at least 10 players roughly to tackle her. Because she can multi-kill, she's very fast, her patterns aren't predictable and she has a wider variety of skills. On the Annie I game mode, you aren't able to respawn nor refill, whereas the Annie II mode allows you to. Here are her skills.

  • Triple Mawashi: She'll do the taken-from-the-anime's triple kick. Almost everyone that touches her lower leg bursts into smithereens.
  • Swatting: Rather than the slow grab that takes a lot of her time when facing multiple players, she'll just swat or even like wipe you off of her, insta-killing you.
  • Grab: Her grabs can reach any part of her body. And what's more is that even Jean can't escape her clutches.
  • Sweeping Kick: Once you're on the ground, you're already en hazard to sweeping kicks. Your life ends before you even notice. This can easily be dodged by LCTRL

Colossal Titan- Another one of the anime/manga's highlights. The Colossal Titan mode sends you to both defeat the Colossal Titan and Protect the civillians at the other end of the map.  Sounds easy?

Oh, I think I forgot to mention that all the inbound Titans are abnormals. The abnormals will take about four paths inward. If a titan flops over one of the civillians, then it's automatic game over.

In this game mode, as soon as you spawn, the Colossal Titan smashes the whole wall area the players started on. That's when you should probably skedaddle the heck away. After that, you'll be able to divide yourselves.

Trost- Remember that episode when Titan Eren carried the boulder towards the hole on the entrance? This is where you start.
The players will find themselves escorting Eren to the gate. Any titan that touches Eren can easily dislodge the boulder, crushing Eren and boom, game over.

When all the titans are killed and Eren reaches the gate, he'll slam the boulder into the breach and you'll live happily ever after.

VII. Personal Tips

The tips I state here may or may not be applicable to everyone's battle strategy or style. These are mostly from my own point of view and from other players.

  • Although replicating what was shown in the anime is really difficult, almost improbable in the game, it is still doable, with your own version and style. If you're really into your favorite character, you'd need to watch where they grapple, when they use the gas, and their direction. That's when you can start trying to replicate it in the game. Trust me, practicing awesome moves work wonders in impressing your friends.

  • Try to get used to shooting only one hook at a time. That way, you'll be able to save the second hook as a backup or if the first one misses your actual target. It is also most practically applicable when you suddenly need to evade an unexpected attack or to correct your direction.

  • Deploying gas can allow the player to reach speeds of about 75m/s. It's really useful to try and plummet into the neck of the Colossal titan or any titan for massive damage.

  • Kill smaller Titans by utilizing the sword's range from the front of its face is possible, provided that you travel fast enough to impact. In other words, if you're fast enough, you can kill midget titans by slashing their faces.

  • "Snapping". Well, that's what everyone calls it. Probably because you're able to snap directly to the titan's neck when you're orbiting around the titan. Snapping is done through the mousewheel. When you're orbiting a titan's head in a pendulum maneuver, you are usually far away and out of range of the neck. By timing it correctly with spinning the mousewheel(take note that the faster you spin the mousewheel, the more line distance you cut from the desired point.), you will be able to snap to a titan's neck. Summarizing this uncleanly explained bit:  You go from orbiting a titan in circles to making a direct line towards wherever your hook is placed.

  • Annie(Female Titan and Spoilers) has a wide range of martial arts attacks that she will use. Each one of them are instant kills and instead of the slow grabbing, she simply swats you. Do not bother going directly for her neck, because just like in the anime, she's aware of everyone's position in her vicinity. Your target is her calf muscle. The muscle in between her knee and ankle, and at the back. She'll be unaffected if you slash it in front. On normal mode, the calf has 50hp. Slash it and the female Titan will fall down on all fours. That's when you can slash her nape. After each strike to her nape, your blades will break instantly. Just like the crystal defense she does in the anime. Retreat to the treetops or a safe distance to replace. You'll need to coordinate who attacks and who falls back when you're in a team. Oh, and once you guys defeat her, I'll give you a heads up and run. Trust me and run..

  • The Colossal Titan can be solo'ed when thought of realistically. The trick is to Mikasa bomb(that's what they call it) the Colossal Titan's neck from the highest height climbable. To get as high as you can, there is an invisible wall behind the Colossal Titan that is hookable. By climbing up this and special attacking with Mikasa, you'll be able to reach speeds able to hit over 2000 damage.

  • Eren Titan can insta-kill crawlers by kicking. I need not state this but this is justice.

  • Double-tapping any direction button [W,A,S,D] will give a small burst of gas. This'll allow you to evade Titan attacks while in the air or reposition yourself.

  • Another intuitive replacement for [Q] and [E] for the hooks is using the mouse. Left mouse click for left hook, right mouse click for right hook. That way, your grappling becomes somewhat more precise.

  • "You can use Levi's special whenever you want and eventually get awesome-looking kills (and very high damage like 1k/2k). You just have to "snap" (community would say "reel in") when the special's hook hits the target and then watch ! The timing is kind of hard to get when you start but keep practicing and you'll see." Thanks, +Lawis Coast !

and pardon my late reply. It took me a while to figure out how to fix the blogger comments.

  2. Maybe you can give some tips on how to get kills as a titan. Some of my strategies...
    - Belly flop is your friend. The trick to getting a bunch of kills is to time your belly flop at the right moment.
    - When in a large map, like Outside the walls, if a player is chasing you on a horse, run away. At the last second, turn around and belly flop. Especially useful if you are pretending to run towards one of their capture points, and a whole group chases after you.
    - Use jump or belly flop to mess up a person's orbit.
    - Watch your energy bar. Try using a guerilla approach as a titan instead. For example, run around in circles, and flop at people unexpectedly. They will have no idea where you are going, and it will make it harder for them to get to your nape.
    - If you are playing as a titan with friends (who are also titans), form a group. That way, you can over each other's weaknesses: the bigger titans can belly flop the ones on the ground, and the smaller ones can jump to pick out airborne humans. It also helps to run around in circles or seemingly random directions, as long as you are close enough to assist each other.

I am not a pro, but these tips served me well.

    1. Cool! My friends and I don't actually play as titans a lot, so our views are kind of biased towards human characters. I'm currently making a new guide regarding the new version. May I include your tips?

So basically, search "AOTTG Download" and download what you see fit :D
(I have a modded version too with the modded hair and stuff but I forgot where I downloaded it =_=)

    1. It's pretty difficult. But theoretically, you can only use it when grappling on titans.

Once you're circling around a titan, it'll work. Or you could use Levi's skill and scroll down while spinning.

    1. Sadly, it doesn't. I tested everyone's passive skills with custom characters; and none of them seem to get linked
